Totally Rad4

The simplicity, efficiency and freedom of being on the road had me hooked when I first started living out of my unmodified RAV4 a couple of years ago working in Nevada. Since then I’ve schemed everything from mini Nissan cargo vans to overhauled Mercedes Sprinters, pickup trucks to box trucks, and everything in-between. It took a lot of standing with my hands on my hips kicking tires and long walks in the woods to settle my mind before I decided to stick with my Toyota RAV4. Its legendary reliability, plucky attitude and small size on top of the fact I already own it made it too hard to pass up.

The space constraint keeps me in check much like with ultra-long distance backpacking: it forces me to have a finely tuned sense of cost-benefit analysis. I still managed to fit four seasons of gear in the car, including four packs, two pairs of skis, clothing, a full cook set, a weeks worth of food, five gallons of water, a cooler, bidet, helmet, ice axe, various poles, climbing gear, three hammocks, a tent, full tool set and much more. Minimalism operates on a sliding scale related to the task at hand and for my do-anything vehicle, I’d say I hit the nail on the head.
